How do you put value on the things you can purchase?

How do you put value on the things you can purchase?  It’s tricky, right?  Housing costs from coast to coast vary greatly but does that mean one home is less valuable than another?  What about fuel?  Also expensive but can you put a value on travel?  Is there a price associated with seeing the wonders of the world, or time with your family when they live out of state?  That type of travel seems different than a work commute, doesn’t it?

What about when it comes to your body?  Are there things you would spend money on without a second thought (hygiene, contact lenses, work clothes) and things you wouldn’t think of spending money on outside of a special occasion (a personal chef, a stylist, daily spa treatments).

I always find it interesting in conversation to hear where bodywork therapy fits in the value mix.  To some it seems luxurious, like somewhere they really ‘shouldn’t ‘spend their money.  Mostly, though, I hear that people have convinced themselves that the pain they are living with is something to become accustomed.  This idea makes me very sad.

I love this email from a dear client just a few months ago:

“I flinched at the price by the way, but then I had the moment of realizing you could help me end the pain permanently. Then I was like, fine, whatever she charges for that, it’s worth it. Then I realized, shit. I’m in pain right NOW and I’ve trained myself to tune it out because nothing has helpedI’m tolerating pain, and it will get worse if I do nothing and this is likely to end the pain for good. And I’m sitting here wondering if it’s worth it? What is wrong with me?!   If you can help me get out of the chronic pain permanently, I’m just ready. I’ve been tolerating it for too long, and didn’t even realize I was tolerating it.  I cannot freakin’ WAIT.”

My vision is to live in a world where people are remarkably comfortable in their body and pain free, able to participate in all physical activity without restriction, where the concept of ‘these aches are a byproduct are getting older” is abolished.

Doesn’t that sound priceless?
